What Is Brazing?
Brazing is a widely used metal-joining process across various industries, where two different metals are bonded into a single, durable structure. The process involves heating a filler metal-such as copper, aluminum-silicon, silver, gold, or nickel-until it melts and flows into the gap between the adjoining workpieces. The filler metal becomes liquid just hot enough to achieve capillary action, spreading throughout the joint without the need for external force.
During brazing, a flux is applied to purify the molten filler metal and improve its flow for proper wetting. Wetting ensures that the liquid filler metal flows smoothly over the surface of the base metals, creating a uniform bond. Once cooled, the filler solidifies, securely holding the components together.
While related to welding and soldering, brazing differs in key ways. Unlike welding, where both the filler and base metals are melted, brazing keeps the base metals solid throughout the process. Compared to soldering, which works at higher temperatures and requires tight-fitting joints, brazing allows for capillary action to occur in small gaps between the joined parts. This makes brazing a versatile and efficient option for creating strong, reliable metal assemblies.
Why Is Oxygen Preferred Over Air in Brazing Operations?
Oxygen is favored over air in brazing because it enhances heat concentration from the heat source, enabling more precise and seamless metallurgical work. It also helps regulate the temperature during brazing, ensuring that only the filler metal melts while preventing the base materials from overheating or melting.
Using isolated oxygen in the working environment reduces the margin for error, resulting in more consistent results. Additionally, it lowers operating costs by improving efficiency and reducing material waste, ultimately increasing the return on investment (ROI).
