Overview of Cryogenic Plant Cold Boxes - Air Separation Units (PDF)
The cold box in an air separation unit is a large, well-designed rectangular box that houses the main cryogenic equipment. Some suppliers use circular silo designs in which equipment is supported primarily by cold box foundations. The cold box walls consist of steel plates welded to the cold box frame. The space between the cold box walls and the equipment is filled with insulating material.
This cold box frame and base design has some key features:
Structural support:
Load-bearing capacity: Able to support the weight of process equipment, pipes and valves to ensure stable and safe operation.
Liquid Level Capacity: Considers liquid operating levels to ensure safe operation of equipment and pipelines.
Wind load and seismic adaptability: Meets the high wind load requirements of national codes, adapts to installation requirements in seismic areas, and provides additional structural strength and stability.
Low temperature cold box design:
Square column cold box: Installed in air separation equipment to reduce heat leakage and maintain extremely low temperatures within the equipment.
Low temperature environment: The internal temperature of the cold box is maintained at an extremely low level (-196°C) to ensure the normal operation of the required process.
Vacuum Insulation: Uses a vacuum to prevent heat transfer, reduce heat transfer to the external environment, and ensure stability at extremely low temperatures.
Such a design is crucial in air separation equipment to ensure safe operation of the equipment under extreme temperatures and environmental conditions. At the same time, the structural stability and adaptability also make it suitable for earthquakes and high wind loads.
